This is a good sampling of Parton's work in the first few years that she deliberately chased a crossover career in Hollywood. The country-pop stuff might offend purists, but it still gets the toe tappin'. "Hard Candy Christmas" and her updated version of "I Will Always Love You" (both from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) show her growth as an interpreter.

NINE TO FIVE
(Dolly Parton)
« © '80 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stratch and try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumping
Out on the street the traffic starts jumping
With folks like me on the job from nine to five
Working nine to five what a way to make a living
Barely getting by it's all taking and no giving
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
Nine to five for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead but the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me
They let you dream just to watch 'em shatter
You're just a step on the bossman's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away
In the same boat with a lot of your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship will come in
Then the tide's goin' to turn and it's all goin' to roll your away
Working nine to five what a way to make a living
Barely getting by it's all taking and no giving
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
Nine to five yeah they got you where they want to
There's a better life and you think about it don't you
It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it
And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet
Working nine to five what a way to make a living...

BUT YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU
(Mike Settle - Pierre Delanoe)
« © '68 Devon Music, BMI »
When the morning sun streaks across my room
And I'm wakened up from another dream of you
Yes you know I'm on the road once again it seems
All that's left behind is a chain of broken dreams
But you know that I love you you know that I love you oh how I love you
And how I wish this love was all we'd need to live
What a life we'd have cause I've got so much to give
But you know I feel so sad down inside my heart
That the dollar signs should be keeping us apart
But you know that I love you you know that I love you oh how I love you
And if only I could find my way back to the time
When the problems of this life had not yet crossed my mind
For the answers could be found in children's nursery rhymes
I'd come running back to you I'd come running back to you
But you know we can't live on dreams alone
Got to pay the rent got so I must leave you all alone
But you know I made my choice many years ago
And now this traveling life well it's the only life I know
But you know that I love you you know that I love you oh how I love you
But you know that I love you you know that I love you oh how I love you

HEARTBREAK EXPRESS
(Dolly Parton)
« © '81 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
Packin' my suitcase writin' a tearstained goodbye note
Stayin' so long to a love gone wrong and that's all she wrote
Leavin' behind what once was mine with sad regrets
But it's all gone now and I'm leavin' town on my heartbreak express
Walkin' in the rain with a heart full of pain to the train depot
The only thing that's gonna keep me warm now is my overcoat
Lost and lonely waitin' in line at the ticket desk
Hey Mr would you give me a one-way ticket on my heartbreak express
I'm gonna roll on down the line
I'm gonna go so far I'm gonna get it off my mind
It hurts to know it ain't enough when you give your best
Get a ticket to ride and I'm leavin' tonight on my heartbreak express
[ sax ]
Oh I couldn't hold a candle to the flaming beauty that caught his eye
It's killing me now but I won't stay around and let him watch me die
Oh it just goes to show that you never do know cause I never would've guessed
I'd be sittin' here now on a train sorrow bound called the Heartbreak Express
I'm gonna roll on down the line
I'm gonna go so far I'm gonna get it off my mind
Maybe someday somewhere someway I will forget
But there's no goin' back so roll on down my track you old heartbreak express
Feelin' alone while a low whistle moans on the heartbreak express
Roll on roll on roll on down the line gonna get him off my mind
Roll on roll on roll on down the line gonna get him off my mind
Got a ticket to ride and I'm leavin' tonight on the heartbreak express

OLD FLAMES CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO YOU
(Hugh Moffatt - Pebe Sebert)
« © '78 Rightsong Music, BMI »
Downtown tonight I saw an old friend someone who I used to take comfort
From long before I met you and I cought
A spark from her eyes of forgotten desire with little word or a touch
Lord I could have a candlelike fire but old flames can't hold a candle to you
No one can light up the night like you do
Flickering embers of love I've known one or two
But old flames can't hold a candle to you
Sometimes at night I think of old lovers I've known
But I remember how holding them helped me not to feel so alone
And feel you beside me
And even their mem'ries are gone like stars in the night
They are lost in the sweet light of dawn
But old flames can't hold a candle to you

APPLEJACK
(Dolly Parton)
« © '77 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
He lived by the apple orchard in this little ole orchard shack
His real name was Jackson Taylor but I called him Applejack
Now ole Applejack was loved by everyone he ever knew
And Applejack picked apples but he picked the banjo too
Play your song for me Applejack Applejack
Play your song for me and I'll sing
Play your song for me Applejack Applejack
Play your song let your banjo ring
Now I'd go down to Applejack's almost every day
We'd sit and we'd drink apple jar that ole Applejack had made
Then he'd take his banjo down then he'd ask me if I'd sing
And he would play the banjo and I'd play my tambourine
Play your song for me Applejack Applejack...
[ banjo ]
That's when I was just a kid and now that I am grown
All I have are mem'ries ole Applejack is gone
Oh but he left me his banjo and it always takes me back
And everytime I play it I still hear Applejack
Everybody sing play your song for me Applejack Applejack...
Oh play your song for me Applejack Applejack...
One more time play your song for me Applejack Applejack...

ME AND LITTLE ANDY
(Dolly Parton)
« © '77 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
Late one cold and stormy night I heard a dog a barking
Then I thought I heard somebody at my door a knocking
I wondered who could be outside in such an awful storm
And then I saw a little girl with a puppy in her arms
Before I could say a word she said my name is Sandy
And this here is my puppy dog it's name is little Andy
Standing in the bitter cold in just a ragged dress
Then I asked her to come in and this is what she said
Ain't you got no gingerbread ain't you got no candy
Ain't you got an extra bed for me and little Andy
Patty cake and bakersman my mommy ran away again
And we was all alone and didn't know what else to do
I wonder if you'll let us stay with you
Giddy up trotty horse goin' to the mill can we stay all night
If you don't love us no one will I promise we won't cry
London bridge is falling down my daddy's drunk again in town
And we was all alone and didn't what we could do
We wonder if you'll let us stay with you
She was just a little girl not more than six or seven
But that night as they slept the angels took them both to heaven
God knew little Andy would be lonesome with her gone
Now Sandy and her puppy dog won't ever be alone
Ain't you got no gingerbread ain't you got no candy
Ain't you got an extra bed for me and little Andy

HERE YOU COME AGAIN
(Cynthia Weil - Barry Mann)
« © '77 Screen Gems Music, BMI / Summerhill Songs, BMI »
Here you come again just when I'm about to get myself together
You waltz right in the door just like you've done before
And wrap my heart round your little finger
Here you come again just when I'm about to make it work without you
You look into my eyes and lie those pretty lies
And pretty soon I'm wonderin' how I came to doubt you
All you gotta do is smile that smile and there go all my defenses
Just leave it up to you and in a little while
You're messin' up my mind and fillin' up my senses
Here you come again lookin' better than a body has a right to
And shakin' me up so that all I really know
Is here you come again and here I go
[ guitar ]
All you gotta do is smile that smile....
Here I go and here I go and here I go
Here you come again and here I go and here I go and here I go

(Carol Hall)
« © '82 Daniel Music, ASCAP / Otay Music, ASCAP / MCA Music, ASCAP »
Hey maybe I'll dye my hair maybe I'll move somewhere
Maybe I'll get a car maybe I'll drive so far
They'll all lose track me I'll bounce right back
Maybe I'll sleep real late maybe I'll lose some weight
Maybe I'll clear my junk maybe I'll just get drunk on apple wine me I'll be just
Fine and Dandy Lord it's like a hard candy christmas
I'm barely getting through tomorrow but still I won't let sorrow bring me way down
I'll be fine and dandy Lord it's like a hard candy christmas
I'm barely getting through tomorrow but still I won't let sorrow get me way down
Hey maybe I'll learn to sew maybe I'll just lie low
Maybe I'll hit the bars maybe I'll count the stars until dawn me I will go on
Maybe I'll settle down maybe I'll just leave town maybe I'll have some fun
Maybe I'll meet someone and make him mine me I'll be just
Fine and dandy Lord it's like a hard candy christmas
I'm barely getting throung tomorrow but still I won't let sorrow bring me way down
I'll be fine and dandy Lord it's like a hard candy christmas
I'm barely getting through tomorrow but still I won't let sorrow bring me way down
I'll be fine and dandy Lord it's like a hard candy christmas
I'm barely getting through tomorrow but still I won't let sorrow bring me way down
Cause I'll be fine I'll be fine oh I'll be fine

TWO DOORS DOWN
(Dolly Parton)
« © '77 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
Two doors down they're laughin' and drinkin' and havin' a party
And two doors down they're not aware that I'm around
Here I am cryin' my heart out feeling sorry
While they're havin' a party just two doors down
Lying across my lonely bed in this lonely old department
Crying about the way that life's kickin' me around
My love of yesterday is gone but he promised no tomorrow
But they're feeling no sorrow just two doors down
No two doors down they're laughin' and drinkin'...
I think I'll dry these useless tears and get myself together
I think I'll wonder down the hall and have a look around
Cause I can't stay inside this lonely room and cry forever
I think I really rather join 'em two door down
Yeah two doors down they're laughin' and drinkin'...
I can't believe I'm standing here dry eyed all smiles and talking
Making conversation with the new love I have found
I ask him if he'd like to be alone so we start walking
Down the hall to my place waitin' two doors down
Oh two doors down they're laughin' and drinkin'...
Yeah two doors down they're laughin' and drinkin'...

IT'S ALL WRONG BUT IT'S ALL RIGHT
(Dolly Parton)
« © '77 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
Hello are you free tonight I like your looks I love your smile
Could I use you for a while it's all wrong but it's all right
The amber sunset glow has died my needs are very much alive
Is it okay if I stop by it's all wrong but it's all right
It's all wrong but it's all right just close your eyes and hold me tight
Tell me sexy lovin' lines it's all wrong but it's all right
It may be wrong if we make love but I just need someone so much
And who knows it might last for life it's all wrong but it's all right
It's all wrong but it's all right...
It's all wrong but it's all right just close your eyes and fantasize
Tell me sexy lovin' lines it's all wrong but it's all right
It's all wrong but it's all right...

DO I EVER CROSS YOUR MIND
(Dolly Parton)
« © '73 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
Oh sometimes I go walkin' through fields where we walked
Long ago in the sweet used to be
And the flowers still grow but they don't smeel as sweet
As they did when you picked them for me
And when I think of you and the love we once knew
How I wish we could go back in time
Do you ever think back on old mem'ries like that
Or do I ever cross your mind
Do you ever wake up lonely in the middle of the night
Because you miss me do you darling
Oh and do your mem'ries ever take you back into another place in time
Oh and do you ever miss the feelings and the love we shared
When you were with me do you darling
I just wonder do I cross your mind
[ ac.guitar ]
Oh how often I wish that again
I could kiss your sweet lips like I did long ago
And how often I long for those two loving arms
That once held me so gentle and close
And when I think of you....

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
(Dolly Parton)
« © '73 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
If I should stay I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know I'll think of you each step of the way
And I will always love you I will always love you
Bitter-sweet memories that's all I am taking with me
Goodbye please don't you cry we both know that I'm not what you need
But I will always love you I will always love you
I hope life treats you kind
And I hope that you have all that you've ever dreamed of
I wish you joy and happiness but above all of this I wish you love
And I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you
